Capitol Avenue Club Podcast :: Episode Two by Capitol Avenue Club

This week we discuss Michael Young trade rumors, Nate McLouth, and the top 20 Atlanta Braves prospects (thanks to www.BaseballProspectus.com). Near the end of the show, we answer some of the questions that you have sent in over the past two weeks, including some advice on becoming a professional baseball scout.

RSS Feed should work now.  Let me know if it works in the comments section below.

Production Notes: I am aware of the slight humming/buzzing noise.  The part to fix that has yet to arrive, but I expect to receive it soon.  Also, my internet connection was poor when we recorded the show, so some of Peter’s words sound really long and drawn out, but I have done my best to fix that.

  1. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Atlanta Braves Buzz and Kevin Orris, Braves MLB Scores. Braves MLB Scores said: Capitol Avenue Club – Captiol Avenue Club Podcast :: Episode Two: http://bit.ly/gWw3Qn [...]

  2. I just tried to manually add your RSS feed to the list of podcasts I subscribe to in iTunes and it gives me an error:

“There are no playable episodes of “Capitol Avenue Club >> Podcast”.
The URL might point to text-only episodes, or contain file types that iTunes cannot play.

  3. Jabuck says:

    Doesn’t work in Zune either.

    • Kevin Orris says:

Alright, I’ll look into this more today and do my best to get it figured out. I think we may need to find a different player that makes the files available on the page. Let me see what I can do and I’ll update the post.

  4. Trevor says:

My favorite part – “A Dan Uggla / Michael Young double play combination would be a disssssaassssssssster”

  5. Some of my words are warped at hilarious times, the one Trevor mentioned probably being the best.

  6. Buckhead Braves Fan says:

dissaaaaaaaaster. What exactly would have to happen for Teheran to be called up this year? Would either Minor or Beachy have to struggle? I really don’t want to drive to Buford to watch this kid pitch, though I know I’m going to.

  7. First of all, Teheran would have to be MLB-ready. He’s not right now, that might (probably will) change between now and the end of the season.

Second, there would have to be a need.

If Teheran is ready, a starter goes down, and the Braves are 1 game out of the division lead in early September, I bet they’ll let Teheran fill in down the stretch.

  8. Scott K says:

Another very good offering gentleman. Can tell it was the second edition (in a good way). Keep up the good work as always.

  9. tim in mpls says:

    Kevin,

Just a minor suggestion. I’d try to avoid saying “I hate the guys that do X&Y…”. I know you don’t really mean it, but it just comes across poorly.

  10. Buckhead Braves Fan says:

    @ 11 – not the feedback they’re looking for.

  11. Mattmus says:

I was listening to 790 out of Atlanta, and the fellas eluded to a buzz going around about the Yankees exploring a trade with ATLANTA for Tim Hudson and Derek Lowe. Any insight on this? O yeah what the hell???? I like our rotation!!!!!!

  12. That is very strange.

Tim Hudson is a 10-and-5 and can’t be traded without his permission which he likely won’t give. I could see Atlanta entertain the idea of trading Derek Lowe, I don’t know how far talks would get, with Lowe being such an important part of the rotation.

  13. Buckhead Braves Fan says:

Who would we be targeting on the Yankees????

  14. Shaun says:

Who wins the backup infielder-who-can-play-short job? This was a hot discussion yesterday in the comments part of DOB’s AJC Braves blog.

My view is that Diory Hernandez is probably the better bet over Ed Lucas. Lucas is the better hitter but he’s mostly been a thirdbaseman. My thought is that if Lucas was that good a defensive shortstop, he’d have played mostly shortstop in the minors. Diory has played mostly shortstop in the minors and seems to have better range based on some of the metrics. Plus Diory’s recent Triple-A offensive performance seems fairly solid. Not that either guy is going to add much.

You know it’s a great time of year when you are arguing about backup/replacement-level utility infielders.

  15. Kevin Orris says:

    11/tim

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll take it into consideration.

    13/Mattmus

    I don’t see it happening.

    15/Buckhead

Curtis Granderson, although he has a big contract?

    16/Shaun

Ask me again during the last week of March.

  16. Mattmus says:

They did mention the 10 and 5 rights. They also said “They would have to move someone of their major league roster.” Well after all it is just a buzz. On a personal note I find the trades that never happened more of an interest than the ones that did. Example: The Braves and Pirates almost trade of Barry Bonds. Yes, the ever famous word almost. This such said word only really counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Lol

  17. Jon says:

I’ve heard some people say Teheran’s name “Tay-HAY-ron” but you guys pronounced it “tay-RAN.” I’m just curious of the actual pronunciation so that I can make sure that I say it correctly too.

It was really interesting, too, that the only time you heard that lag piece was when Peter was talking. I didn’t make too much of it, since it didn’t really bother me too much at the time. However, seeing some of the comments made me think of it now.

I have a small qualm with Kevin. Throughout each little segment, you provided a short summary of what you guys just talked about 5 seconds ago. While some others might not see anything in it, I feel “babied” in a sense. In my opinion, I don’t believe it’s necessary to repeat what had just been said or agreed upon within the show.

I did make one of my hours of the work-day go by a lot faster than the rest. And I thank you guys for that. It is good work that you guys are doing, and there is a lot of room for improvement to make this show even better.

  18. Trevor says:

    @ Jon/19

From what I’ve heard, Teheran’s name is pronounced “tay-RON”, like the Capital of Iran. But maybe I’m mispronouncing ‘Tehran’ too.

  19. Joel says:

    Trevor,

That’s what I’ve heard as well. It should be pronounced like the capital of Iran.

  20. Luke M says:

My girlfriend is a spanish minor and says that it’s Tey-he-ran with an emphasis on the ‘ran’ but I’m sure Julio is the best man to answer the question.

For now I just refer to him as the guy who gives me a baseball boner.

  21. Travis Hoyle says:

Kevin or Peter is there any way that you can make this available on itunes through there podcenter that would make it alot easier for me and alot of other people who listen to podcasts on their ipod

  22. Kevin Orris says:

    Travis,

We’re working on that as we speak. We’ve tried to create an RSS feed that will put it into iTunes, but unfortunately it isn’t working. If anyone has any knowledge on this, don’t hesitate to contact me at kevinorris@capitolavenueclub.com

  23. kcr211 says:

Spanish major here. Teheran is pronounced ‘Tay-heh-ran, with the accent being on the first syllable. The second syllable doesn’t have a pure long -a, it’s sort of between a long a and an -eh– to pronounce it as “hay,” or to have it rhyme with the first syllable would sound very Peggy Hill. Finally, if the accent were on the last syllable, there would be an accent mark over the -a; there is not, so it isn’t.

  24. Luke M says:

Good call kcr. I think this is closer to what she said too, I “misremembered” to quote Roger Clemens.

  25. Joe says:

Is it just me or does Kevin sound like Seth Rogen? Keep it up guys, I appreciate the hard work!

  26. Ryan D says:

Spanish, unlike English and French, has regular spelling.
‘a’ always sounds like the ‘a’ in “father”
‘e’ always sounds like the ‘e’ in “Infante”
‘i’ always sounds like the ‘i’ in “piano”
‘o’ always sounds like the ‘o’ in “poem”
‘u’ always sounds like the ‘u’ in “stupid”

Oh, and j’s are h’s in disguise.

I hope either Delgado or Teheran pitch out of the bullpen in September/October to be a not-so-secret weapon. I wouldn’t bet against it.

  27. Jon says:

Buster Olney grabs some good stories:
“Alex Rodriguez to Texas was the worst signing in the history of baseball in my view,” MacPhail said. “Why? Because he played as well as you can possibly ask the kid to play. He had great years. And the needle didn’t move at all. … The team didn’t improve. Attendance didn’t go up. But hey, they got the lead story on ESPN. Well, if that’s what motivates you, you’re going down the wrong path. You want to put 35,000 people in the ballpark, win the games. That’s what [fans] are there to see. That’s what the Orioles need — to win some games.”

  28. SF Braves Fan says:

    @ 30

There is also a pretty interesting piece by David Cameron on Fangraphs today posted in response to that quote in which he pretty persuasively argues against that line of reasoning.

  29. Trevor says:

    @ 30 / 31

I read both. Very interesting perspectives from both points of view. I can understand MacPhail’s point-of-view on the subject; a lot of money was spent and the team didn’t succeed and fans didn’t come to the ballpark. A very linear view for sure.

Cameron’s piece basically stating that A-rod did succeed as a player, he did everything possible to assist the team, but the rest of the team was awful – therefore not A-rod’s fault and investment in him was not a terrible decision.

I think the best comparison for Braves fans would be Teixeira. He was obtained at great cost to push the Braves to the playoffs. He did all he could, but the team itself failed due to injury. Was it a bad trade? I’d say so in hindsight. At the time (I still didn’t like it), but it was an understandable gamble. It wasn’t the players fault, but it was a move that didn’t work out.

  30. Carlos says:

Do you think that today we value prospects a bit too much? It is never a sure thing for anyone to make it to the bigs and this is true for even the top ranked players. I just wrote up a post on my opinions prospect value and I wanted to see what you guys thought.

  31. Mattmus says:

I remember the Alex R. signing. I also remember John S. stating at the winter meetings ” We gave it a valiant effort, to sign Alex” But in the end money is the deciding factor here or greed however you want to look at it. John S. always had a way of making a big splash, occasionaly. If we had signed him it would have been for a reasonable amount of dollars and years, not cripple the club. When you get one owner willing to gamble everything on one player it becomes damage. The evidence is all around the MLB, not just this deal. Some owners have more money than brains, money just exaggerate the person you really are. @ Texas owner ship

  32. Edward says:

Requesting a little more structure in the podcast:

clearly announced official segments, breaks between, a little bit of cheap-yet-catchy music, etc.

I like listening to you two, but it’s hard to keep up with something so continuous.

    Still, you know, y’all rock.

    • Kevin Orris says:

      Edward,

Thanks for the feedback. Neither of us are very good at the production end of it, but we’re looking to improve the show. We have some things in mind that we hope to incorporate starting with the next episode, but they will come gradually.

The production will definitely get better over the next few episodes, and we’ll do our best to make it into more “segments.”

  33. TCQ says:

I’d second the segments thing, but also keeping the recaps to a minimum. No one’s really skipping to the middle of a CAC podcast, y’know? Gotta think everyone who’s there at the end of the section has a pretty good grip on what’s been covered.

  34. Wandering John says:

#22 Luke-girlfriend is wrong. #25 kcr211 way off. You should consider a new major. I have a Spanish degree and work in Latin America, but that’s beside the point. The ‘H’ in Spanish is silent. The accent falls on the second to last syllable as it does in all unaccented Spanish words ending in ‘n’. That said, the name should be pronounced something like this: Teh-eh-Ron.

  35. Mevs says:

I really like the show and I’m looking forward to listening all season. Glad to see CAC doing one of these.

  36. Nate says:

Just listened, nice job guys. Have a couple comments:

    1) What about doing something along the lines of….6 topics, each 10 min long, with a short break in between? Or 4 fifteen min long segments? Would maybe lend some more structure for the listener, and you can drop teasers in on the breaks. 60 straight minutes is hard for me to follow, even for as much as I like to listen.

    2) Music Sample suggestions:

    a) Kernkraft 400 by Zombie Nation- start at 1:21, let it run 10 seconds and then fade and start the intro. Cheesy, but it is Marquette’s unofficial sports song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5LW07FTJbI)

    b) Slinky by Brownout – the entire song is sample-worthy, but the hook at 1:03 is RAD, and the buildup from :50 would be a nice lead-in. The horn section at 2:34 is a good sample, too. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pICAnDidE8E)

    c) Chicago by Groove Armada -1:19 to 1:50 is mad smooth. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkiRjPgECyE)

    Looking forward to podcast #3.

  37. Nate says:

Oh and also, obviously I don’t know what you guys are using for production (if anything), but Goldwave 5.58 is excellent editing software, and it’s free. Also has 7-band EQ and noise-reduction so you can kill that audio hiss.
