Aggregate Top 25 Prospects
February 7, 2012 at 1:49 pm by Ben Duronio under Atlanta Braves, Prospects
Today Kevin Goldstein released his top-20 prospect list and yesterday Jonathan Mayo released his. Even though Keith Law is scheduled to release his later this week, I felt like putting together the list now and aggregating it before Law’s is released.
I took the lists from Baseball America, MLB.com, Minor League Ball, Baseball Prospectus, Talking Chop, Bullpen Banter, Chop-n-Change, and our own to compile the list. Below is the aggregate top-25
1. Julio Teheran
2. Arodys Vizcaino
3. Randall Delgado
4. Sean Gilmartin
5. Andrelton Simmons
6. Christian Bethancourt
7. Edward Salcedo
8. Tyler Pastornicky
9. Zeke Spruill
10. J.J. Hoover
11. Brandon Drury
12. Joey Terdoslavich
13. JR Graham
14. Carlos Perez
15. Matt Lipka
16. Nick Ahmed
17. Adam Milligan
18. Tommy La Stella
19. Todd Cunningham
20. Kyle Kubitza
21. Mycal Jones
22. Dimaster Delgado
23. Billy Bullock
24. Cory Gearrin
25. Navery Moore
I like the list a lot, and ours is actually rather comparable with a few differences. As Martin from TC has pointed out, the top-15 or so is usually extremely consistent though the order varies. I may decide to either make an additional post or edit this one once Law’s list is put together.

Where would Mike Minor go on this list? Also, has he used up his rookie status?
Still amazed at the young starting pitching talent we have. Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, Minor, Tehron, Delgado and Gilmartin… and that doesn’t include Vizcaino or Medlen.
It seems as if Minor and Gilmartin might form to be the same type of pitcher. Would it be wise to trade one of them for a bat? I know we’re not lefty strong but that doesn’t seem to be a major problem with the talent levels we already have. Thoughts?
I wouldn’t trade either at this point. Trading the closer to arbitration or guys already in arbitration, is the better option for a team in the Braves’ payroll and revenue situation.
Minor is probably the best bet to throw 200 innings this year, which has value in itself. I have been high on Minor for a very long time, more so than other bloggers and most scouts. Since his velocity has jumped up, he has pitched marvelously. Gilmartin has that same type of potential, though the velocity jump cannot necessarily be expected, though it certainly is possible.
I would be much more inclined to trade Jurrjens before getting rid of one of those two. Looking at next year, with how much Jurrjens will cost and how many prospects will be ready, how can he even fit on the roster? I don’t see it. If Teheran or Delgado prove ready and Hudson returns to health, Jurrjens could be gone as early as this season.
Ben, completely agree with the JJ forecast. Really hoping for JJ to repeat his 1st half performance to drive up trade value before trading him at mid season. The return package by end of season will be less due to his arb3 status and the other team would only get 1 full year of his service.
Yeah I guess the whole time in the back of my head I was assuming JJ would be the first to go before any other pitchers. As Roger said, really hoping JJ can have a great bounce back and more importantly healthy first half. Helps the team with production and trade value.
Yeah I guess it would makes sense to get them into their arb years and re-evaluate then. Kinda forgot to take that into account.
Like the list but one question : Why would you use Chop-n-Change versus Jonathan Mayo’s MLB.COM Rankings ? CNC is not highly regarded when it comes to prospect rankings.
On a semi-related note… does anyone know the line-up of the “Future Stars” for the GBraves v. ABraves game?
The O’s return for Jeremy Guthrie has me a little concerned over what we could get for JJ. If the Braves don’t trade JJ before this years trade deadline then the return that they are going to get would most likely be marginal. Hopefully they learn a lesson from the Os and maximize his return by dumping him before the deadline.
I actually did include Mayo’s, forgot to add him in the title though. Both Joe and Mark, the two who did the rankings for CNC know their stuff — Mark just got hired by the Braves.
ive been saying this all offseason that FW is waiting until a team experiences a big injury in Spring Training ala Wainwright from last year and then trade them JJ for either prospects or a left fielder if that team has someone that can mash LHP
7. Rosters for that aren’t known yet. Probably won’t be until right when the season is about to start, as only then will it be certain which roster some players would even be on.
8. J.J. is a lot better than Guthrie. As much Fangraphs WAR in 300 less innings.
10.
It’s certainly possible. For all we know he has been talking to the Red Sox for the past few weeks and has been watching the price gradually increase with each free agent signing pass them by.
The only frustrating part about trading him now would be that the money saved would basically be stashed away rather than for an offseason acquisition, though it would create some breathing room for a midseason deal.
@12
Of course its possible that in a trade the Braves would take on salary too. And if they didn’t it would provide some breathing room for a midseason deal as you stated, or the team could spend the money in the draft instead. Wouldn’t that be a novel approach?
I was wondering bout the whole center field debacle and if Bourn does fly the nest any chance of making Heyward a CF and maybe going after a corner OF? signing Hamilton out of the question?
Thanks for putting this together.
Unrelated note, any thoughts on revising the “Commenting Policy” page? Seems out of date now.
It seems that Law doesn’t really care much for the Braves system right now. Four prospects in the top 100, two top 20, two between 90-100. Maybe this is where we see ownership’s lack of investment the most. Or the refusal to go over slot to back up MLB. Or both.
