Game 21: Pirates 4, Braves 2
April 28, 2012 at 10:28 pm by David Lee under Atlanta Braves
Source: FanGraphs
Game MVP: Alex Presley, .149
Least Valuable Pirate: Clint Barmes, -.082
Most Valuable Brave: Michael Bourn, .098
Least Valuable Brave: Randall Delgado, -.278
Big swing: Martin Prado grounded into a double play with one on and no outs in the seventh, -.123.

That double play was 1 in 1000, I mean a perfect roller right into the bag like that. and too bad Hinske only made it 389.5 feet on that last Blast.
I noted on Twitter that I would have found it odd if Freeman wasn’t too far behind Delgado regarding WPA. Checking out the WPA, I’m wondering why Prado wasn’t all that much better than Freeman despite having 2 hits and a run scored.
Because he grounded into that double play.
Great work on the site guys. Big time reader, not really a commenter, just wanted to say that.
Thanks, jmartin. Appreciate it.
I cant believe he played Francisco against a LHP that in the short year has only allowed 1 hit to a LHB coming in. Should have played Chipper today and Francisco tomorrow. Either that or Diaz just to get another RH bat in the lineup. Stupid decision.
I’m not a big Fredi defender, but I can see why he played Francisco. As they said on the broadcast, Fredi would have preferred moving Prado to third and playing Diaz in LF, but Diaz was the emergency catcher. The fact that Chipper wasn’t in the line-up indicates one of two things to me, either the medical staff has put him on a certain playing schedule until his knee is fully healed, or Chipper himself felt that his knees were bothering him.
It was a regular scheduled day off for Chipper. Chipper is going to continue to play 3 or 4 games in a row followed by a day off. You won’t see Chipper playing 5 or 6 games in a row this season. It’s just not going to happen with his knees the way they are. Chipper had just played 3 games in the past 4 days. No surprise that he wasn’t in the lineup last night. And Fredi was handcuffed a bit. The only way he could have not played Francisco (who has proven he can’t hit LHP) was if he had played Jack Wilson at 3B. Kinda surprised he didn’t go that route.
You could still do Diaz in LF and then if Ross gets hurt move Diaz into C and then play Francisco more likely to face RHP more.
Bedard’s been good this year despite his record. Still worried about the hitting over the course of the season. Enjoying this blog. Lots of great info. Keep up the good work!
Heres hoping that Huddy comes back as he was then at least we got 4 quality and big league ready starters, he sure sounded upbeat last night. Last night was just one of those nights, we were due some bad karma and could still have won if one of our aces had been pitching. Not hating on Randall but he isn’t ready, I note people calling for Medlen to be put in rotation, we know he can do it but I don’t think Fredi will back down and change his masterplan. I would just bring Teheran up and see what he can do, surely he can top a 6.5 era? Both Randall and Teheran are on a big learning curve, Randall had a chance this year and not done bad but lets see what Teheran can do in limelight?
According to Keith Law. Teheran has regressed heavily since 2010.
His fastball has lost movement and is straight as an arrow. He has lost command of it too, and his fastball ends in the upper part of the zone where it’s more hittable.
Also, his curve and change are not fooling anyone. According to Statcorner, his FIP in AAA this year is 6.31 and his tRA is 6.50. If he keeps pitching like that, Teheran will need a demotion, not a promotion.
Delgado? I think he does fine when ahead in the count. The problem is, Delgado is throwing a first pitch strike in just in 36.1% of chances when the ML average is 44.6%. And overall he is throwing inside the zone in just 30.1% of his pitches, when the ML average is 41.5%. That means a lot of 1 – 0 and 2 – 0 counts.
I wonder though if some a Julio’s issues are just overthrowing. I have not really seen him but I wonder if with a not so good short stint in Sep for the big club and a bad ST has him trying to prove he is better than that and is not trying to just blow people away as opposed to just pitching his game
The Braves racked up 14 strikeouts offensively last night. It’s hard to sustain rallies and score when over half of your outs are strikeouts. But one thing I did like was the number of pitches the Braves saw last night.
Fredi Gonzalez is looking like a genius for the way he handled the Tyler Pastornicky situation. Pastor has been great since getting those 3 games off to get back to his approach and doing what he’s best at.
I understand your point but please don’t mention Fredi and genius in the same sentence, they are worlds apart.
Red Sox collapse and their effectively fire a 2 time World Series winning manager!
Braves collapse and no one cares. The woes of not being in a hilariously large market. The media won’t pressure the team into making the right decision for incredibly stupid reasons.
The thing I don’t get about the Francisco/Diaz situation tonight, is why couldn’t Diaz have played left and then moved to catcher if anything were to happen?
That is exactly what I was saying after that.
