Game 32: Cubs 1, Braves 0

May 9, 2012 at 4:53 pm by under Atlanta Braves

Source: FanGraphs

Game MVP: Paul Maholm, .432
Least Valuable Cub: Ian Stewart, -.117
Most Valuable Brave: Tim Hudson, .175
Least Valuable Brave: Chipper Jones, -.198
Big swing: Bryan LaHair RBI single in the seventh put the Cubs ahead 1-0, .203

It’s rare to have both starting pitchers as the teams’ most valuable players, but 1-0 games are sort of rare. Maholm continued his good pitching with seven scoreless innings on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He induced 13 ground balls and just two line drives. Tim Hudson did even better, inducing a whopping 17 ground balls with two line drives. However, Hudson gave up a lone run in his final inning, which was manufactured by the Cubs. A tough loss for Hudson and the Braves.

Freddie Freeman walked twice. Martin Prado had two hits, including a two-out double in the eighth, but was left stranded. Chipper had the worst WPA on the Braves in two of the three games at Wrigley.

Braves wasted some good opportunities. If Wilson is one step more to his right he probably makes that play and the game is still going. Oh well not much you can do. Still a 4-2 road trip.On to St.Louis. Hopefully they cool off some.

St. Louis is tough, but if they can just take one, it’s still a winning road trip.

This has been a weird schedule to start the year. Tons of road games, very few off days, and at the end of May, the Braves will have played all 6 of their games against both the Reds and the Cardinals, but will only have played the Marlins and Phillies a combined 5 times. Weird stuff.

I don’t know about Captain Jack being one more step to his right, I would prefer about 3000 steps so that we never have to witness his total lack of offensive ability. I am not calling his defense but the offensive downside is painful to watch. Good outing for Tim but not much else to shout about.

First we got no pitching, but score runs. Now got pitching ,but no offense. When are we going to put it together

  5. melotticus says:

At least they didn’t use durbin

This was one of those games where it’s apropote for Fredi to tip his cap. Maholm was fantastic today and both teams really deserved to win the game. Hopefully, the next time such a game happens, the Braves will be on the winning side.

Of course Huddy was on top of his game. I mean 17 ground balls in 7 innings? That’s amazing! If Minor can get control over his emotions, if Hanson can adjust to his lower velocity, and if Delgado can keep his confidence up, this could be a great rotation come the end of the season.

Hopefully, hopefully, hopefuly Wren recognizes that the Braves don’t need Durbin and the DFA him. I said this the other day to some friends, “Fredi needs to switch Durbin with Medlen, and then switch Martinez with Durbin.” I don’t see why he’s on the team, I really don’t. It must be pride on Wren’s part. What else could it be? I just don’t know.

Management has always been reluctant to admit that they made a mistake and keep players that don’t belong and are hurting the tam far too long, unfortuantly we are probably going to be stuck with Durbin for a long time to come.

  7. Marc Schneider says:

Can’t be happy when you score 4 runs in three games against a bad pitching staff. It’s frustrating especially preceding a trip to St. Louis.

I have never used this blog before, I have been using AJC’s David Obrian for the past couple of years. I have so much trouble trying to post on any AJC site that it nearly drives me crazy, I am not a very good typist and anytime I touch something on my computer that isn’t right my computer jumps to another page and I lose what I was typing and it makes me so dammed I want to throw my computer against the wall. I don’t have that problem on any other webb site other than AJC so I am trying to do a simulated post on this site to see if the problem is with AJC, if it is my computer or if it is just me. So far the only problem on this post has been sometime when I hit the space bar maybe I don’t hit it just right the page will jump up and I have to scroll down but I have been typing for quite a while and haven’t lost my post yet. I am going to keep typing until I get an answer. I am beginning to think that the problem Is with AJC because I have not encountered any of the same problems that I have everytime I try to post on DOB’s blog and I have never typed this much without losing my entire post. I am just rambling on to try and make the same thing happen taht happens almost every time I do a post with more than two or trhee lines. I love DOB’s blogs but I have had to stop going there because I am afraid I will destroy what now appears to be a perfectly good computer. So far I am concluding the it is the AJC webbsite that is the problem, I have mentioned it before on DOB’s blogs several times and a few people have come back and said they are having the same problem. I narmally use Internet Exploer and I thought that might be the problem so I tried using Google Chrome but still have the same problem. Please forgive this long ramble and I am going to post in hope that I will get some feedback. I have never typed this long on any of the AJC blogs so I am concluding that there is a problem there. I WANT FEEDBACK ON THIS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.

    Panamaralph, pretty impressive trolling commitment.

Worst Brave 2 out of 3 games at Wrigley. No wonder Chipper has no sentimental feelings towards it.
