Stinginess Ranks Update

August 11, 2009 at 1:45 pm by under Atlanta Braves

I’ve updated the Stinginess Ranks per request of a reader. Here are the new ranks, I’ll make a few comments after:

1. Philadelphia
2. NY Yankees
3. Texas
4. LA Dodgers
5. Toronto
6. Tampa Bay
t-7. Cleveland
t-7. Chicago Cubs
9. Milwaukee
10. Florida
11. LA Angels
12. Minnesota
t-13. Boston
t-13. Detroit
15. Colorado
16. St. Louis
17. Washington
t-18. San Francisco
t-18. Seattle
20. Atlanta
t-21. Oakland
t-21. Pittsburgh
23. Cincinnati
24. Baltimore
25. Chicago White Sox
26. NY Mets
27. Arizona
28. San Diego
29. Kansas City
30. Houston

First of all, I’m not at all surprised that the two teams with the worst front offices in baseball are 29th and 30th in this little study.  Makes perfect sense.  I’m surprised the Royals aren’t worse than the Astros.  They’re a really god awful organization.  It seemed like the Royals were last or 2nd to last by the skin of their teeth in every category I looked up.

I also noticed, when I was putting this together, that there’s nobody in baseball close to as bad as the Giants at drawing walks.  As a team, they’ve drawn 249 walks.  The Pittsburgh Pirates, a very bad team at walking (walking more comes with experience and age, the Pirates are a very young team), are 15th in the league, with 322 walks.  That’s 73 more than the Giants.  League average is 387.  Colorado leads the league with 447.  Yep, the number 1 team–Colorado–is closer to the league average than the 16th team–San Francisco–is to the 15th team–Pittsburgh.

Nothing surprises me about the rankings as a whole.  They’re generally what I expected them to be.  Furthermore, in every category I looked at, the teams were about where I expected them to be.

I apologize for the infrequent updates.  I’ve got a lot of things going on, but I should stabilize fairly soon and get back to regular updates.

UPDATE 08/08/2009: I forgot to mention this, but I also found this fascinating.  The Boston Red Sox are 29th of 30 teams in defensive efficency.  I thought for sure they’d be close to the best in the league in that category.  That’s clearly a weakness that Theo needs to address.  If not now, in the off-season.  Kotchman was probably a big upgrade.  And getting Lowrie healthy will help as well.  And that just means their pitching staff is even better than we think it is.

  1. Thank you sooooooo much for doing this. I am surprised the Braves are 20th, and that the Cubs are so high. Do you have an idea as to why that is?

thanks for posting–nice to see my team improve from 4 to 2 !

  3. PWHjort says:

Yes Mike. Your team is very stingy. The only thing keeping them from being 1 is the bunts. Jurrjens4NLCY, we’re 20th because we suck ass at running the bases and frequently make idiotic baserunning mistakes. We’re actually fairly good at getting on base. But we haven’t been too stellar defensively this year either.
