Braves.com recap for Wednesday’s win.
AJC quotes following Wednesday’s win. David Ross on his first career stolen base: “You know it’s funny, Mac’s got a ton in his career and I’m just jealous. I need to catch him a little bit. He’s got like five or six a year. I have one in my career. I told Mike B when I came in after the game, I’m coming for him.”
Tim Hudson: “I was telling Rossy, I went about four innings where I hardly missed a spot to a 25-pitch stretch where I don’t know that I really hit one. Just didn’t make any good pitches, fell behind in the count. Whenever I did make a good pitch, they fouled it out and then they just got some pitches to handle, got some base hits. Obviously the big blow was there to Howard. Just couldn’t get that sinker in there on him. Tried to freeze him with a frontdoor sinker, and a couple of them came over the middle of the plate. He fouled a couple of them off. I tried to make an adjustment and threw it back over the plate and he got me.”
Mark Bowman’s notes include quotes from Jonny Venters saying his arm is feeling the best it has all season right now. Venters’ elbow didn’t respond following his activation from the disabled list a couple weeks ago, but added rest seems to have made a big difference. He has looked good in his past two outings, namely a fastball that is sinking at 94-95 again.
Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes on the speculation surrounding Michael Bourn to the Phillies this offseason.
Andrew Sisson of Brave Decisions writes on the inevitable Peter Moylan situation and how Cory Gearrin is better off in the Atlanta pen.
Around the NL East
Ozzie Guillen will attempt to justify the Heath Bell contract by putting him back in the closer’s role. If Ozzie thinks Bell is the best option for the spot, so be it. But it’s comically bad when the decision is based on a contract, and it’s pretty obvious that’s the case here. Current closer Steve Cishek hasn’t allowed a run in his last 15.2 innings dating back to June 25, and he’s 6-6 in save opportunities over that span.
Giancarlo Stanton went off on the Mets last night, hitting two home runs off Chris Young in his second game back. ESPN Stats & Info has the numbers on his performance.
Dayn Perry of CBS Sports says don’t forget Stanton among the best young players in the game.

I was a walk-on at Carson Newman College when Cishek played there. He was ridiculous! I love seeing a CN Eagle doing well! Great run for the Bravos let’s stay hot and hope the Nats get cold.
As I started reading the Bourn article I thought it was going to sound like a NY/BOS article from a decade ago discussing the inevitability of Superstar X heading to the Bronx/the Fens in the offseason. Then I read the comment from the scout discussing Bourn’s age, low OBP and high K rate. It will be very interesting to see how this unfolds in the offseason. If the negatives can scare teams off until January maybe the Braves could snatch him back at a lower price (and more importantly fewer years) but as I have said several times if the Nats or Phils want Werth 2.0 on the books please have at it.
I’m kind of hoping he goes, at this point. Unless we can somehow convince him to take a cheap, 3 year deal, then I’m not sure we want him. I’d almost rather have Heyward in center, for development purposes. I think moving him to CF will keep him agile, somewhat fast, and improve his already good defense. If he stays in right, he doesn’t have much incentive to do anything but put on weight and hit for power. I’d like to keep Heyward as a 5 tool guy rather than an exclusive power guy, and I think moving him to center could keep him on top of many of his tools to pair with his bat.
I feel spoiled getting accustomed to seeing this lineup put up 12 runs. It’s pretty awesome. Glad the boys could pick Huddy up (and glad he could pick himself up with the bat). If we keep playing like this, there isn’t a team that could beat us. If the Nats keep playing like this, the only team that couldn’t beat them is the Astros. Maybe honorable mention to the Rockies.
Am I missing something? The Nats losing a series seems as hard to find as finding reindeer shit, they must be doing something right.
Have you seen their last 3 games? They are EXTREMELY lucky to have made it out with a win, let alone 3.
I think that’s more a testament to the ineptitude of the Astros. Gio Gonzalez pitched a 3-run complete game last night while our #1 starter gave up 6 in 4 1/3 and Disturbin picked up the win.
That’s why I said the Astros are the only team that COULDN’T beat them. And maybe the Rockies. Bottom line, the Nats have looked pretty vulnerable and the Braves look tough to top. Any team that puts up 12 runs doesn’t have to worry much about the output of their starter.
Yeah that was my point exactly. Relying on offensive production like that is not a formula for success. Having a starter go 9 will usually give your team the win. The Nats swept the Astros where we went 2-1, which points out the frustrating aspect of waiting for their inevitable collapse, which by the day seems less and less inevitable.
What kind of deal is it likely to take to sign Bourn, at this point?
The Nats/Astros are in the middle of a four game series.
Luis Durango for CF next year! Please do not give Bourn a contract that will burden the franchise in the long term. Trade Hanson and non tender JJ! Use Chipper’s money wisely and get a bat for left field and commit to Prado long term!
ESPN insider just posted an article projecting every NL teams starting lineup for 2013. They filled free agent spots ala bourn with the best internal option (constanza SMFH). Pretty good read and the Nats look stacked next year needing to replace Edwin and add a LOOGY. This is gonna be a good rivalry the next 5 years.
To add the lineup looks very weird without chipper in the middle and he had heyward batting third.
