Game 134: Braves 8, Phillies 7

September 2, 2012 at 9:25 pm by under Atlanta Braves, Chipper Jones

Source: FanGraphs

Game MVP: Chipper Jones, .895
Least Valuable Brave: Paul Maholm, 14 game score
Most Valuable Phillie: Ryan Howard, .124
Least Valuable Phillie: Jonathan Papelbon, -.966
Big plays:
1st – (PHI) Ryan Howard two-run double for a 2-0 Phillies lead, .133
1st – (PHI) Erik Kratz three-run double for a 5-0 Phillies lead, .128
9th – (ATL) Chipper Jones three-run homer for an 8-7 Braves win, .872

Chipper Jones produced an .872 WPA on the game-winning home run, which is probably the highest WPA play I’ve ever seen. To compare, Brooks Conrad’s grand slam against the Reds in 2010 was worth .803. It nearly doubles Chipper’s previous high WPA play going back to when FanGraphs starts recording the data in 2002. It’s also the highest individual WPA in a game I’ve ever seen.

Of course, Jonathan Papelbon’s WPA is just ridiculous.

If you’re choosing a signature moment in Chipper’s final season, you could do a lot worse than tonight’s home run.

Also, you might remember a crazy 15-13 win over the Phillies back in early May. If not, here’s a refresher. The game-winning home run in that game came off the bat of Chipper Jones.

If you’re a Braves fan, or just a baseball fan, I hope you’re storing these memories of Chipper. It’s something to tell the next generation.

At 40, he’s still the best hitter on the team. Why don’t more teams manage their aging superstars the way the Braves have handled Chipper’s playing time this year?

  2. Ian says:

Unreal. Not something I’m likely to forget for a long, long time.

  3. shred the gnar says:

I was fortunate enough to be at this game in John Schierholtz’s seats in row 2 behind home plate. I had a wicked headache the whole time and still do but wow what a game.

  4. Chris says:

Thank goodness, i just recently purchased mlb.tv for $10 and was watching it on my ps3. I highly recommend the mlb.tv deal for $10 though. but anyways, What a shot! Great comeback. Its cool to see him do something like that again

  5. Gavin says:

My buddy left with an out in the ninth. What a bum.

  6. Carlos Collazo says:

    What a game.

  7. Brent Gibson says:

I still can’t believe it. I can’t watch the games where I live but I try to follow all of the games on At Bat when I can. I am just now finding out that they won, and I’m kinda in shock. I am hoping for a Rangers/Braves world series so I can maybe see Chipper play one last time.

I’m 36 and a Braves fan since i was 4…Things will never be the same after he retires.

  9. Durbin the Destroyer says:

I am one of the sinners, I turned it off at 7-3, couldn’t face anymore frustration then received a text asking if I was watching what had happened. Unreal, hopefully a kick in the nuts the team needed to keep going down the stretch. As for Chipper, what can you say that hasn’t already been said – Legend to the end!

  10. Corey says:

Was out at dinner with my family when it all went down. Saw the highlights at the restaurant. Even my dad, a Phillies fan, was impressed with how chipper took that itch from Papelbon and put it a good 15 rows up the right center field bleachers.

  11. Ron E. says:

How come a walkoff homer doesn’t have a 1.000 win probability?

    • Dan says:

It does. It just doesn’t have 1.000 win probability added. The win probability was not zero before he hit the homer
