Source: FanGraphs

Game MVP: Andrelton Simmons, .199
Least Valuable Brave: Jason Heyward, -.108
Most Valuable Marlin: Carlos Lee, .178
Least Valuable Marlin: Gorkys Hernandez, -.128
Big plays:
3rd – (MIA) Carlos Lee RBI double for a 1-0 Marlins lead, .128
4th – (MIA) Gil Velazquez RBI double for a 2-0 Marlins lead, .110
4th – (ATL) Dan Uggla RBI double for a 2-1 Marlins lead, .132
4th – (ATL) Andrelton Simmons RBI double for a 2-2 tie, .168
4th – (ATL) Error scored two for a 4-2 Braves lead, .225

Tommy Hanson got down early by giving up two RBI doubles in the first four innings, but he was able to last the usual 5.1 innings, walking two and striking out four while throwing 92 pitches.

The bottom half of the Braves lineup was the victor this time as Andrelton Simmons had two hits, including the game-tying double in the fourth, and Dan Uggla added two hits and three RBIs. David Ross also had two singles in between.

Martin Prado added a double to make it 40 on the season.

The Braves are certainly doing everything they can to catch the Nationals, but Washington isn’t cooperating, and it appears they will win again tonight, barring something crazy.

Edit: The Nationals did indeed win, making it four games back with six to play.

Gosh, the Nationals are such jerks for not letting the Braves win the division.

    • JohnWDB says:

There’s a distinct possibility the Nats get swept by the Cards. Unfortunately, even if we sweep the Mets, we would still need the Phils to beat them, and it appears they would magically miss Lee, Hamels, and Halladay.

      • JohnWDB says:

Oops, Lee slated to pitch the final game of the season but no Hamels/Halladay

        • Steven says:

That could be good enough for a tie if we can take care of our business this weekend. I’m hoping not to lose another game with the schedule as favorable as it is. Just hope the Pirates aren’t fighting for .500 M-W

  2. Jackdan says:

Agreed x10. Damn nats. If we can make it past the wild card game, at least we get the first two games at home, and maybe just maybe we can head to washington with a 2-0 series lead

  3. Harris K says:

    Could easily be Cincinnati

  4. Jackdan says:

True true. The cards will unfold soon

  5. JohnWDB says:

Do WPA calculations not include errors that let 2 runs score? If so, it seems like Peterson would be the least valuable Marlin.

  6. Zack says:

Is Hanson going to be one of our starters if we make it past the wildcard game? Or do you think they go with a Sheets, Delgado, or Tehran?

  7. Spence says:

    From ESPN:

Kris Medlen is expected to start for Atlanta in a wild-card game. If the Braves advance in the playoffs, a four-man rotation likely would include Tim Hudson and Mike Minor. That would leave Hanson and Paul Maholm competing for the final spot.

As if there is any question whatsoever that Maholm wouldn’t beat out Hanson. Postseason games are just too valuable to have Hanson pitch as anything but a ROOGY. I’d have to think even Fredi would know to roll out a 4 man rotation. But he has been known to surprise people at times.

    What ever happened to Sheets?

    • Michael says:

I was wondering the same the other day. Guess he must be rotting away in the bullpen? The way most of our games have gone lately, we haven’t really been needing any long relief.

  9. vivabeta says:

Geez wouldn’t it be neat if we had a 1-2 inning right handed reliever who could strike guys out and whose name isn’t Durbin?

Oh hey Mr Sheets! I hope you’re enjoying your rest out there in the bullpen.

Does anyone else feel slightly shafted that we’re going to have a 50/50 shot of getting into the postseason, playing against a team that will likely finish 7+ games behind in the standings?

    • Michael says:

No, not really. Do you feel slightly shafted in that had they started the 2nd wild card 1 year earlier that we would have still had a chance at the playoffs?

The only reason people don’t like the added wild card is if they are position to be eliminated by it. If we were in 1st, we wouldn’t care. If we were in 4th, we wouldn’t care. However, if we were that 2nd team, we would freaking love it.

Opinions will be based on point of view which is not a fair enough evaluation of the new rule.

Overall, it’s good for the sport as it ensure that last year’s final night of drama will play out every year. Starting next year, even the schedule will be adjusted so that it’s not so packed into a short period of days.

    • Charlie says:

Absolutely. I hate the new rules. The old system allowed a team like the 2010 Yankees who finished with the 2nd best record in the AL, but just happened to be in the same division as the team with the best record in the AL in the Rays, a legitimate shot at the World Series. Now, a team like the 2012 Braves who are currently tied with the Giants for the 3rd best overall record in the NL are only guaranteed 1 game against a team that may finish 7+ games behind them.

      • Charlie says:

Forgot to add that I’d like to see a rule added in regards to the 2nd WC team. If the 2nd WC team finishes say less than 5 games behind the 1st WC team, then the WC game is played to determine who moves on to the next round. However, if the 2nd WC team finishes 5 games or more behind the 1st WC team, then no WC game is played and the 1st WC team automatically moves on to the next round. That way teams that are close to each other like the Athletics and the Orioles this year would play the WC game to determine which one gets to move on to the next round, but teams like the Braves who could finish 7+ games ahead of the Cardinals this year don’t have to play the WC game against an inferior team (record-wise). I personally don’t think the Cardinals deserve a shot at the playoffs this year if they finish 7+ games behind the Braves, and that’s not JUST because I’m a Braves fan.

        • A-ron the don says:

I like that idea. Except, I would make it that if you are more than 5 games behind the first WC team, you have to beat the 1st WC team twice. Like this year, the Cards would have to beat the Braves twice, with the Braves needing to win just one.

        • Michael says:

Right… but would you hate the rule if it were the Braves that were 7 games back of the Cardinals and in the 2nd spot?

        • Charlie says:

Yes. Just like it isn’t fair this year for the Braves to have to play a team that might potentially finish 7+ games behind them, it wouldn’t be fair for the Cardinals to have to play the Braves if the Cardinals finished 7+ games ahead of them. If there’s a rule I don’t like, I hate it regardless of how it affects my team. I’m sure I’m in the minority on that stance, but that’s the way I honestly feel. Would I still watch the game and cheer for my team? Absolutely. That doesn’t mean I’m all of a sudden in support of the rule though.
